This could have different reasons. Maybe the author likes the visual distinction? Or 20 years ago it was the recommended way to do it. People did read the old code and thought it is the right way to do it. At the beginning I used keyword symbols too because I saw in other one code and I was thinking it has to be like this. Later I learned it better.
