SLY splits window horizontally after installing sly-asdf and sly-quickload

I use SLY with GNU Emacs and SBCL on Linux Mint Cinnamon and I recently installed the sly-asdf and sly-quicklisp extensions.

Prior to installing the extensions, with the Emacs window maximized at full screen M-x sly opened the SLY buffer by splitting the Emacs window vertically. After installing the extensions, with the same Emacs window setup M-x sly splits the window horizontally.

Any insight into why? I haven't changed anything in the setup other than installing the extensions from MELPA.

amoroso The only thing I could think of is that something made a change to display-buffer-alist. Do you see anything interesting in there?

My ~/.emacs contains this code for customizing SLY as well as this:

amoroso Those are from my sly config which I also posted in another thread here. If you want the default behavior, just setup sly with:

(use-package sly
  :ensure t)

Meanwhile, it looks like you didn't have anything else in your display-buffer-alist so just reset it with:

(setq display-buffer-alist nil)

ggxx I like your window config and it worked fine just prior to installing sly-asdf and sly-quicklisp. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to reset display-buffer-alist and when: in ~/.emacs or manually in a session?

The part of the display-buffer-alist that says:

 ("\\*sly-mrepl"
  (display-buffer-in-side-window)
  (side . bottom)
  (slot . 0)
  (window-height . 22))

is what's putting the REPL at the bottom of the screen. If you don't like that behavior, remove it or change it.

I tried uninstalling sly-asdf and sly-quicklisp but the issue persists, i.e. M-x sly splits horizontally whereas prior to installing the packages it split vertically. No big deal but it's weird.
